Rae, this is my first attempt. :D

With weekly reports of this food or that one being recalled, I decided to give it a try. Next up is to learn to process for freezing or canning.

Good veggies, very nice. I wish I could grow vegetables. I can grow any flower or shrub with no problem, they thrive. Veggies, I have no luck what so ever.

I want those, I love this time of year when the vegetable stands open and I can get everything fresh.

OMG your cucumbers & squash are fully grown mine are still plants. I think I saw some flowers yesterday. Have to check again. I hear you Lynn, I am growing some of what I eat too. I am grateful for my small space. It's only 4x4 feet but I got squash, cucumbers, okra, leeks & egg plant growing there. Just enough for me, hubby & a couple neighbors. I have tomatoes & green pepper growing in a large wooden tub. Some herbs, hot peppers, lettuce and strawberries growing in pots on the deck. And 2 yards full of flowers. What else you got growing?

They look great Lynn!! Enjoy them!

We had problems with the squash and zucchini this year here ... blossom rot. The whole plant died. :-(

Mary-Austin, I have blossom rot now. I did not know what to call it, but you described it perfectly.
I've been spraying like crazy with an insecticidal soap because I have aphids and thought that was the problem. I've gotten 5 yellow squash off one of the two plants and now everything is looking weird. And only one of the zucchini plants has produced.

This is my first attempt at veggie gardening. Actually, I'm usually Darth Vadar to all plants but have made this my project for this year.

Interesting that you're seeing it too? .... it's strange this year. I had no problem with the squash/zucchini last year at all. Really did nothing besides the occasional fertilizing and a little insecticide. Something really happened this year!! I never even got a zucchini - lots of blooms but no fruit. A friend nearby had the same issue and we're wondering if there just wasn't enough pollination going on. Read somewhere to put hay under the squash to get them up off the dirt. Not sure if it works because mine died before I could try it!!

I got a few more zucchinis from the same plant since the photo, but now either the blooms are dropping off on all the squash plants or what is being produced is misshapen or very small but rotten near the dead flower.

I found aphids; am spraying with insecticidal soap, mixed up a concoction of garlic water, made a tea tree spray, cleaned out dead material from around all the plants.

Certainly since this my first attempt, I have much to learn; but when you said something about "blossom rot," you perfectly described what I think I'm seeing.
:D If the plants don't "straighten out" within the next week or ten days, I'm starting over again with the squash.
