Farmer's Market Challenge August 2009 Edition

Judy at "The Road to Here" is on a mission to raise awareness of local farmer's markets and sponsor's the Farmers Market Challenge. Pop over to Judy's to see photos of farmer's markets around the country as well as those in other parts of the world.

Austin Farmer's Market.

Wheat grass or squash blossoms, anyone? If I had known that people buy dried squash blossoms, the $3 item, I would have saved those that kept dropping off my squash plants.

This beef isn't from around here - we have no grass due to the extended drought! :D

Don't these figs look scrumptious?

I came across this roadside stand in Johnson City, Texas on my way to the vet.

Bought the best tomatoes from this stand. It was kind of neat experience in that I needed to go to the bank and only had $3 plus a dollar in change. The tomatoes were $5. I got them for $4.

Don't forget to check out the other markets.

Until next time, God bless.

Hi Lynn,

That's a good looking market, I want some of those beautiful figs. I haven't seen any here yet.

I know there is some use for the dried squash blossoms but I have no idea what it is. For that price I hope it's a tasty one.

Before I read your comment I was wondering if the beef was local. I guess it came from a place that got rain unlike most parts this summer.

Thanks for taking part in this month's challenge. Are you up for a couple more before the end of the year? I was thinking about the last weekend in Sept and the first weekend in Nov. All the pumpkins and such should be around by then.

Thanks again,
Judy

The figs did look good! The beef was pretty pricy! Is that a typical price for your area? I like stopping at those little road side stands.

Thanks for sharing.

Wow you also got squash blossoms there? What do you do with it?

We put ground meat in each fresh squash blossom, dip it in a batter and fry it...it's yummy! You should try it. Thanks for sharing I am really learning a lot.

And yes Lynn we can eat green mangoes, there is one variety of it which can eat even if its unripe, it's crunchy, juicy and we dip it in a special shrimp paste.

I love looking around different parts of the country and how the area's produce varies. We are fortunate up here where it's lush, wet, and green. Of course that means lots of rain, although we are also in a drought up here in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks for the pictures, Lynn, and yes, I want those figs!

Hi Lynn, that's the biggest figs I've ever seen! This is a neat farmers' market! And the grass fed beef I think is a little bit expensive.
