A Small Mishap

Luc is showing me how sorry he is for what he did to me yesterday.

One of my new accessories. Old, muddy work coat for the background. :D

A pair is not required with this accessory, thank God.

Ice pack beside the new accessory.

Knee pads when I get tired using the crutches. Oh, yes, here is the Advil, the anti-inflammatory.

So how did I come by these items and why? Well, yesterday on the way home from the Christmas luncheon, I saw about a year-old English Setter running down the road. I stopped to see if he had a collar and tags; and if so, get him into the car to take him home in order to call the owner. He was young, lost, and scared. He would not come to me.

I decided to go home, pick up Luc, some food, water to see if I could lure him into the car. Hubby decided he would go along too, which was a good idea as it played out. I know Luc goes into hyper-exuberance upon seeing anyone or any dog. However, I thought I could control him with the leash that snaps around my waist.

He was all excited when I got him out of the Jeep, but when he saw the dog, he went nuts. I was on gravel, he was pulling and jumping all over the road, and started pulling me into a barbed wire fence. As I was trying to avoid the fence, I stepped down into a small ditch, the ankle rolled, I went down, and it took about 5 minutes for me to gather the courage to get up. Hubby helped me up, I hopped over to the Jeep, sat down in the tailgate area, and there was a golf-sized swelling on the right ankle. We still tried to get the dog, but he was not having anything to do with us. If I had taken Maggie, who is easier to control, I think we could have gotten the dog into the car.

After about 10 or so minutes, we went home. I hopped from the car to the grass, crawled to the porch, then slid on my backside into the house. As an aside, it is a tad humiliating to be crawling around the ground or floor at 70 years old! We filled a bucket with water and ice into which I plunged my foot. A bit of trivia, I understand that ballet dancers keep a bucket filled with ice water to plunge a foot into if a sprained ankle is suspected.

Anyway, my ankle looked pretty bad and we decide that perhaps I should go to the doctor for an xray -- just to be on the safe side. That decision was a good one because I did crack the tip of my ankle. Since the bone is still in place, I'm to ice for the rest of today and then start wearing the boot tomorrow for a month. By the weekend, though, I should be back in gear for some more Christmas decorating. :D

I hope I can drive a car since it is the right foot. Anyone had an experience with a right foot in a boot? I will be genuinely cramped if I cannot drive a car. Oh, and when I can walk normally again, Luc is going to have some serious obedience training!

Until next time, God bless and Merry Christmas!

Oh that sounds so painful. Labs are so exuberant and they can certainly inflict a lot of damage without much effort. I am sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you are up and about soon. That is too bad about the Setter. I imagine someone has dumped him and he is scared. I hope someone rescues him.

oh no! you're right about the bucket of ice water that dancers use: ice then heat then ice than heat. stay off that leg and heal up. and I love the snowflakes on your blog! clever!

I'm glad you went to the doctor's for that x-ray, because you would have wondered if it was broken or not. I hope the little puppy ended up all right, but I'm glad YOU are! You're right, when I hurt my leg it got well using the old RICE method: rest, ice, compression, elevation.

Oh My Lynn!! I'm so sorry!!! Hope you are up and around quickly. Darn ankles... dogs.. and holes in the ground!! I tend to roll mine as well on any little thing!!

The good news is a friend, the birthday girl, is bringing some roast, etc., tomorrow. While I did not think it necessary, hubby stayed home today. I admit he has been a great help. I haven't mastered the crutches too well, i.e., like transporting something liquid from the kitchen area to another spot in the house. And, he also saves me extra steps when I want something in another room.

Life is good, but you never know what is around the corner: 95 percent good with 5 percent inconvenient. :D

Oh Lynn, that is not a good thing, I sorry to hear about your mishaps. Glad to hear you are ok and went to let the doctor check it out. Good too that your hubby stayed home today to cut down on your moving around. You'll be good to go in no time at all but for now rest and let it heal.

The snow looks great, it is fun isn't it.

Oh my gosh. That's terrible. I wish fast healing for you. I was just thinking of the Lab in "Marley & Me" and all his antics.

The title should have been "Luc and Me." lol

This is not the first time that dog has injured me! He has almost killed me or got me killed about 6 times. Luc is a hoot and would not trade one moment with him. But, I can guarantee you this: he is going to learn to behave when on a leash and sees a dog(s) and people! His time is coming.

Sorry to hear this! I'm glad it wasn't more serious. How terrible to be hobbling around over Christmas. I'm sure Luc felt bad about it.

Labs due tend to be a bit over-reactive... but isn't that why we love them?

I know this is terrible..but when I looked at this I yelled to my husband "look look" I snickered cause I was in the same boat maybe a few months ago! Mine was the left side. Taking my dog for a walk with my sister-in-law and her small dog. Playing..she (medium size 65 lbs, plowed into me from behind..literally scouped me up off my feet and I came down right on my tail with my ankle twisted. Wasn't as bad as a genuine sprain but none-the-less it was swollen and black & blue for over a week. It's still stiff! I thought I'd chime in and share my sympathy!! Hope you heal completely if you know what I mean!
